LOWENTHAL ANSWERS LOWERY: SHE’LL TELECOMMUTE TO COUNCIL MEETINGS FROM FAMILY WEDDINGS IN INDIA

Suja Lowenthal plans to participate in several upcoming Long Beach City Council meetings via teleconference from India, according to an e-mail her chief of staff, Broc Coward, sent this evening to Greater Long Beach columnist Steve Lowery and cc’d to LBreport.com.
Lowery referenced an LBreport.com story in criticizing Lowenthal in Friday’s edition of his weekly Vector Control column. [Suja Lowenthal---She Came To Say She Must Be Going] Lowert cited the chaos Lowenthal created among councilmembers while successfully battling to be chosen vice mayor—only to announce she would not attend crucial budget-oriented council meetings in August and September. Lowery described Lowenthal as “the most baldly ambitious and ethically lithe” member of the council.
Lowenthal responded today (Aug. 2) through her chief of staff, Coward, via an e-mail sent at 4:40 p.m:
“Mr. Lowery,
With regard to your comments in last week’s Vector Control on Greater Long Beach, you may be interested in knowing that Vice Mayor Lowenthal’s absence from late August to mid September is the result of needing to attend two family weddings in India. She is very close with these family members and does not wish to miss such momentous occasions. And as much as family members wish they could determine such dates, they are simply along for the ride when the invitation arrives.
As a result, Vice Mayor Lowenthal has been working with staff to install the appropriate internet phone software and plans to participate in the council and budget discussions via teleconference. The budget issues facing Long Beach are far too important to miss.

Warning! Greater Long Beach writers and readers posting comments here will please refrain from using four-letter words. The usage of the highly offensive word “crap” has been deemed intolerable and is officially verboten by Mr. Pearl of LBReport.com. Let the Readers Be the Final Judge — Here is my original comment to LBReport.com: “Regarding the failure of the Kroc Project, it is my recollection that the public fundraising portion ($15 million) started to fall apart after Chris Pook of Long Beach Grand Prix fame and his associates withdrew their support after being denied the opportunity to financially capitalize on the project by getting a lucrative contract to handle the marketing. Correct me if I am wrong.”
Mr. Pearl’s offline response: “Mr. Snider: Thank you for your email comments re the Kroc Center. I’m reluctant to use the comments unless/until I have evidence supporting the contentions about Mr. Pook. I’m not saying they’re not true; I just honestly don’t know. Do you know who would know and if they have some memos or backup for this? Thanks much.”
My reply: “Yes Bill. My recollection is from a news piece by Dave Wielenga reported in the District Weekly several years ago. Regards, Dwight.”
My second comment to LBReport.com: “What’s up with this crap! Once again Mr. Pearl feels compelled to rebuke and/or censor reader comments that fail to fall in lockstep line with his cycloptic editorial viewpoint. Is Mr. Pearl under the impression that he, and only he, is the final arbitrator of what is, or is not, the truth? Once again I ask, “Who is watching the watchdog?”
Mr. Pearl’s reply: “Awe, what’sa matter? Can’t handle a response? We’ll buy you a tissue. Yes, readers are the final judge, and as a former Supreme Court Justice once said (paraphrase) the best test of an idea is its ability to survive among competing ideas. In that connection, your descent to four letter words only makes you sound mentally spastic.”
My reply to Mr. Pearl’s reply: “Touche! In perfectly clear hindsight my resorting to the usage of a four letter word was admittedly sophomoric. With due respect to Robert Frost, we all sit in a circle and suppose while the “truth” sits in the center and knows.”
No reply from Mr. Pearl.

So who’s paying for this “internet phone software”and VOIP plan? And everybody knows that folks just surf the web during teleconferences.
Oh wait, they do that during city council meetings, anyhow.
Once the precedant is set all the council members can telecommute.
