POTENTIAL LUNATICS TO PLAY BLUE CAFE AND ALBUM IS ON THE WAY
By Dave Wielenga
The Potential Lunatics, the sister-and-brother punk duo of Long Beach teenagers Emma and Isaac Simons-Araya—whose music is in no way as kitschy and contrived as that description might suggest—have raised the last $400 they need to finish their first album.
Next stop: a gig at the Blue Café Underground on Sunday (April 10) night at 9. Although both band members are far under 21, everybody in the audience has to be 21-and-over to get in. That, and pay a $5 cover.
The Potential Lunatics, who in September played the stage of Green Is Greater Festival (co-sponsored by GreaterLongBeach.com and EgretsNotRegrets.com) and three days ago were working the sidewalk at First Fridays in Bixby Knolls, got the money to master the songs they’ve already recorded by using the Kickstarter.com fundraising site.
Kickstarter.com’s concept is a little like Groupon. Pledges are made to one cause or another, but all funds are held in reserve and the money is only released if the project achieves its target amount within a designated period of time.
Emma Simons-Araya, the Potential Lunatics’ vocalist and guitarist, would not reveal the album’s title—although she has posted a clue on the band’s website as part of a post that includes the word “apothegm.”
