wateraerobics Like a ship’s captain steering bravely into dangerously angry whitecaps, ABC School District Superintendent Gary Smuts promised a roiling sea of 315 white-haired seniors this week that he would explore all possible avenues to save their water aerobics program.

The adult water aerobics class—one of the ABC Adult School’s best-attended but most-expensive classes—is among several programs threatened or already cut in response to the ABC District’s budget problems, which have been exacerbated by a 20 percent across-the-board cut in funding from the State of California. Smuts acknowledged that he had cut the water aerobics budget by an additional 10 percent, for a total loss of 30 percent of the program’s budget.

But Smuts quickly added that Board of Education has given him permission to seek creative solutions.

“The Board has asked me to see if we can come up with a realistic budget to keep the program going,” Smuts said. “We also have a partnership with the City of Cerritos and we are working on developing a community partnership with a mutual purpose to serving our students.”

Smuts promised to have a game plan by the Nov. 16 board meeting and urged the seniors to return on that date for his report.
