FOR FIRST TIME IN ITS 54-YEAR HISTORY, DOWNEY LAYS OFF CITY STAFFERS
By Ben Baeder
DOWNEY (Via the DowneyBeat)—For the first time since it incorporated in 1956, the City of Downey has laid off employees.
Due to the California legislature’s decision to abolish redevelopment agencies, Downey last week laid off its economic development manager and a community preservation employee, according to city officials.
The two employees were among 10 employees paid in part or in whole by the city’s redevelopment agency. The city used more than $1 million of its redevelopment funding to pay staff, and, after the loss of funding, it could not afford the two positions, according to city staff.

This would never happen in Long Beach where city officials firmly believe they are owed funding, no matter what it takes, of their living by Long Beach taxpayers.
Start to get short on funding, just raise fees on everything.
