thumbsdown THE HEADLINE: Two Long Beach schools teaching algebra with iPads

THE STORY: iPads and software were distributed to about 150 students at Washington and Hudson schools as part of a one-year pilot program that will compare the academic performance of a control group of students using the paper version of the new algebra textbook with that of students using the interactive digital version.

P-T COMMENTERS RESPOND:

How long before one kid is mugged (or worse) and the iPad is stolen? / JOE SCHMOE

here is an assumption that all you have to pay for is the ipad then the texts are free like downloading stolen music. In the future the district will probably have to pay for the texts, the reason that sholl texts costs so much is not the printing costs, its for the content. if the ipad version has more content you could expect that the cost for the text plus the “bonus dvd” content will be much more. / 2ND DISTRICT

Great! Now more work for the police department. Just think of all of the stolen IPAD reports they have to go take from these ghetto schools. / JACK

Kind of like how Bush spent billions on his misguided war in Iraq. No Weapons of Mass destruction…Mission Accomplished. / LISALISA

Why must all the brown kids get the fun toys to play with? School districts have no business wasting the taxpayers money on nonsense. I’m sure the Unions will be happy. / OLD GUYS RULE
