Please don’t misread the tone or the implications of the big doings and the big discounts that are featured during the Long Beach Cinematheque’s month-long membership drive. That would be a big mistake.

For example, as the membership drive passes its halfway point this week, the Long Beach Cinematheque is presenting a Valentine’s Night screening of Harold and Maude at the Art Theatre on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m., and a Fat Saturday afternoon of sorts with Mardi Gras/Carnevale festivities at Rainbow Harbor from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Yes, those are events are special—but, no, they are not special events. This is the kind of stuff Long Beach Cinematheque is always mixed up in, either by itself or in collaboration with various partners.

Another example: the markdowns that executive director Logan Crow has made on Long Beach Cinematheque memberships. Yes, those inexpensive memberships are meant to be promotional—no, those inexpensive memberships do not signify desperation.

A warning: do not put off your purchase of a Long Beach Cinematheque membership.

Yes, we said the membership drive, with its good fun and good prices, is a month long—no, we did not mean until February. 29

That’s because the Long Beach Cinematheque’s last big event during its membership drive—the gala Oscar Viewing Party at the Art Theatre—is on Feb. 26. And because the only way anyone can attend that party is to have purchased a Long Beach Cinematheque membership card.

Bottom line: at some point, not having a Long Beach Cinematheque membership card is going to make you look stupid. And with all the opportunities you’ve had to buy a card this month, that would be a big mistake—a big, stupid mistake.
