delong442448 Long Beach City Councilmember Gary DeLong announced via a press release this morning that his run for the newly formed 47th Congress District against state Senator Alan Lowenthal has been endorsed by the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee.

“It is an honor to have the Chamber’s endorsement,” said DeLong, according to a quotation included in the release from the managers of his campaign. “The Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce is known for its ability to effectively represent the interests of the business community and support economic growth. I am pleased they have recognized my commitment to job creation, job protection and economic development, and I look forward to working with the Chamber to develop economic policies that will get our country moving again.”

The release did not elaborate on DeLong’s claim to a “commitment to job creation, job protection and economic development.” It did not cite any evidence that DeLong has created/protected jobs or generated economic development. Neither did the release give examples of any policies DeLong has helped implement or even proposed that would illustrate the nature of his commitment to employment and economic development.

Nonetheless, a quotation that the release attributes to the Chamber’s president and CEO, Randy Gordon, indicates that the organization based its endorsement of DeLong on the councilmember’s claims of job creation and economic development.

“We’re supporting Gary DeLong for the new 47th Congressional District because he has a proven track record of creating jobs and balancing the budget,” said Gordon, according to the release. “We need more representatives like Gary in Washington, D.C., who understand how the economy works, will work to improve economic opportunities for all Americans, and are not career politicians.”

GreaterLongBeach.com made an unsuccessful attempt to contact Gordon for further and clearer comment on the Chamber’s endorsement. A request for an interview was left on his voicemail.

DeLong has previously been endorsed by former Governor George Deukmejian, Congressmen Dan Lungren and Ed Royce, State Board of Equalization Vice-Chair Michelle Steel and Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe.
