kbeachmic Mike Kowal, who was eliminated as a candidate for the 8th district seat on the Long Beach City Council when district boundaries were redrawn to exclude his longtime residence by a half-block, explains his reaction and his plans on the new episode of Greater Long Beach Radio with Dave Wielenga. The show is available 24/7 or as a downloadable podcast.

Kowal, 66, a longtime real estate broker in Long Beach, was interviewed by Wielenga, publisher of GreaterLongBeach.com, on Wednesday afternoon in the dining room of the home in the Los Cerritos neighborhood of Bixby Knolls, where he has lived for 28 years —all as a resident of the 8th district.

Kowal would become a resident of the 7th district according to a redistricting plan submitted by 7th district Councilmember James Johnson and suppored by a 7-2 majority of the City Council. That plan draws the line between the 7th and 8th districts along Bixby Road—the 8th to the north and the 7th to the south. Kowal’s home is about a half-block south of Bixby Road.

In the interview, Kowal reacts to theories that he was deliberately cut out of the race by an alliance of council members loyal to Mayor Bob Foster, defines the issues in next year’s elections that might put him at odds with the mayor and his acolytes and outlines his options going forward—including a growing movement to recall James Johnson that might have Kowal opposing him in a 2012 election.

The in-studio guest is Diane Gurshuny, publicist for 4th Street’s retro row, who reflects on the importance of Long Beach’s funkiest business district to her life—and foreshadows the upcoming events on Fourth Street.

Greater Long Beach Radio, produced in conjunction with KBEACH.org—the online radio station at Long Beach State—airs live every Thursday at 10 a.m. and is rebroadcast every Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
