BURLINGTON COAT FACTORY GIVES COMPTON ECONOMIC KICK IN THE PANTS
By Allison Jean Eaton
The opening of a Burlington Coat Factory and a seasonal Toys R Us store in downtown Compton were promoted Monday by the city’s redevelopment agency (RDA), which is predicting a breath of new life into the local economy—just in time for the holiday shopping season.
After roughly three years of various delays, Burlington Coat Factory has scheduled the grand opening of an 86,000-square-foot story in the Compton Renaissance Plaza this Friday (Oct. 29). The RDA claims to have paved the way for Burlington’s arrival with a $250,000 grant to the shopping center—located at Compton Blvd and Alameda St.— which used the money to create a unique storefront design for the retailer.
Compton Town Center has already received a shot in the arm with the Oct. 6 opening of a seasonal Toys R Us store, which RDA officials said is set to stay through mid-January. They hope, however, that the nation’s largest toy retailer will decide to stay indefinitely.
