SUNDAY FUNDRAISER AT CURLEY’S CAFE TO SAVE LBUSD MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS
By Dave WielengaA dinner to help raise the $380,000 needed to restore middle school sports programs to the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) will be held June 5—that’s this Sunday evening—at Curley’s Café in Signal Hill. The suggested donation is $35; all proceeds go to the Long Beach Education Foundation.
The event is presented by Progressive Dinner Party Long Beach, a group accustomed to wining and dining to raise money for worthy causes, although this particular effort is a variation on its usual method. Typically, the members share dinner and wine with friends at one of their homes on the third Sunday of every other month; they contribute the price of an average dinner to a local cause that benefits children and families.
But the case of Long Beach’s middle school student-athletes demanded a bigger approach.
In March, all funding to the middle school sports programs was cut by the LBUSD Board of Education because of budget constraints. Eight sports had been offered at each of the district’s 26 middle and K-8 schools. The Middle School Sports budget funds LBUSD-qualified coaches, certified sports officials, bus transportation and awards.
In April, responding to the pleas of parents and students, the Board of Directors of the Long Beach Education Foundation approved a rescue effort called “Save LBUSD Middle School Sports!” The goal is full funding.

Isn’t Curley’s owned by Sean Hitchcock, the same guy who bulldozed the wetlands?

Hitchcock’s interests go beyond killing wildlife for money — he enjoys being known as a kiddie soccer dad, too.
Are you sure the money collected isn’t being used to finance Hitchcock’s court battle with the California Coastal Commission which has directed him to remediate the wetlands?
@Blues
#1 there are 3 biological reports that state no wildlife was killed and that the site is not wetlands.
#2 do you really think turning the site to sports fields was for money?
@Ruehle
really, are you that ignorant?
@Ruehle
Good call on pointing out Hitchcock’s history.
@givemeabreak
One should not use the word ignorant as an insult – at least back up your assertion. Of course, Hitchcock will financially gain from this fundraiser. If he has been directed to mitigate wetlands, I’ll bet that’s costly.
It is sad that we have to have fundraisers to subsidize our tax dollars already spent on a failed education system, and leftist buffoons think spending more money is the answer.
