A police officer on duty performs a consummately public responsibility. Officers wear their names on their uniforms because it's crucial that people in the community know their identities. Police are armed and allowed to use force, but they must do so in the service of the public, and under its scrutiny.

Tomas Gonzales says he was fired as an investigator with the Citizens Police Complaint Commission for refusing to soften his investigations into citizen claims of misconduct by Long Beach police officers. He has filed a potentially expensive and embarrassing lawsuit against the City of Long Beach.
